FIT FOR LIFE KIDS CHALLENGE & KIDS FUN RUN/WALK
What
The Fit for Life Kids Challenge is a free program for children in grades 2nd-6th throughout Hopewell public schools. It is affiliated with the City Point 5k River Run/Walk and sponsored by John Randolph Foundation, Hopewell Recreation & Parks, Cogentrix, and Virginia Cardiovascular Specialists.
When
The Fit for Life Kids Challenge will begin on Monday, September 20th and conclude on Saturday, October 29th at 8:00 am with the Kids Fun Run/Walk prior to the City Point 5k River Run/Walk at 9:00 am in Hopewell.
How
The Fit for Life Kids Challenge encourages youth to run or walk 13 miles (half marathon). The fist 12 miles will be completed over the course of a 5 week period and the "final mile" will be completed at the Kids Fun Run/Walk. Participants will track their progress on a Running/Walking Log provided by their teacher. A sample is included on the back of this brochure.
Students may run or walk their miles anywhere they want…at home, during recess, soccer practice, wherever or whenever they can. Parents, guardians, coaches, or teachers may initial each block to confirm that each mile was completed. Incentive prizes will be awarded by the student's physical education teacher at their respective school at the 6 and 12 mile marks along their way. T-shirts and medals will be awarded for students that run or walk mile 13 at the Kids Fun Run/Walk on October 29th.
Race Day (final mile)
All participants must pre-register for the "final mile" (the Kids Fun Run/Walk) no later than Friday,
October 21st either through the Registration page or by completing a form in person and submitting it to your child's physical education teacher.
All participants must check-in at John Randolph Foundation, 112 N. Main Street in Hopewell between 7:00 am and 7:45 am on Saturday, October 29th to pick up their t-shirt and bib number. The Kids Fun Run/Walk will begin on the corner of Main and Poythress Streets. Students are encouraged to wear their Halloween costume as prizes will be awarded.
Celebrate Your Success
The Kids Fun Run/Walk will take students across the same finish line as participants in the City Point 5k River Run/Walk where they will be greeted by cheers from the crowd and awarded commemorative finisher medals. In addition to each child gaining confidence, satisfaction of completing a half marathon and embarking on a life of physical fitness, the school with the highest number of participants will have the honor of displaying the Mayor's Cup and receive a $500 prize to purchase equipment for their physical education program.
Cost
Although the Fit for Life Kids Challenge is a FREE program, students finishing their "final mile" on October 29th are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to the Kids Fun Run/Walk and drop them off at the Boy Scouts of America's donation site located inside the John Randolph Foundation, where check-in for the Kids Fun Run/Walk will be located.
